First of a new and important series of books bringing to life previously unavailable information about South Carolina soldiers who died in the War for Southern Independence. The purpose of the series is to correct, enhance, and add to information already known about South Carolina's perished Confederate sons, using the technology and resources available today. But even more impressive is the revelation of thousands of South Carolina soldiers who have never been listed in the previous formal chronicles. Their absence even extends to "Broken Fortunes", the distinguished work by Randolph W. Kirkland, Jr., which, to the present has been considered the "bible" of South Carolina Confederate Casualties. Over 1000 previously unheralded veterans were revealed in the artillery and cavalry research; the infantry yielded over 3000. The nonpareil information provided about each soldier makes the book read more like a novel than a still history encyclopedia, including, where available: birthdate, residence, occupation in 1860, place of enlistment, date, place and cause of death, where buried, biographical and genealogical information, and personal asides such as letters, poems, diary entries, etc. A wonderful and important resource for those whose ancestors fought for South Carolina or for anyone with an interest in the War for Southern Independence. The cavalry edition in the series is due out this Summer, and the infantry edition for November 2016. There will also be a volume listing South Carolinians who died serving in Georgia and North Carolina regiments, and South Carolina soldiers who died in service but for whom no regiment could be found. Each volume contains a bibliography and index, and there will be a master index in the future.
