Grade 10 Up?A clearly written look at body-marking arts. An introductory section about the history of skin marking is followed by chapters on tattooing, body piercing, and branding that contain historical overviews, descriptions of the processes, health risks, care following the procedures, and personal-experience stories. The dangers are explained and strongly emphasized throughout the book, and readers are cautioned against making decisions in haste, at too early an age, or otherwise ill-advisedly. Factors to consider in choosing an artist are explained along with information about pop-culture and counter-culture associations with body decoration. A final chapter deals with the removal of unwanted body art, which details the difficulty, pain, and expense involved. Wilkinson provides objective information, but discusses the need to inform parents prior to making a body-modification choice. A centerfold section contains several full-color photos.?Lois McCulley, Wichita Falls High School,
