About the Author

Robert Hull has been a teacher for over twenty-five years. He has a special interest in creative writing, and is the author of many children's books. His book 'Multicultural Stories: Stories from West Africa' was short-listed for the Kurt Maschler Award.

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-6-A well-illustrated collection of eight retellings of traditional tales from Native Americans in different regions of the continent. There is a creation myth from the Inuit; an account from the Crow people of how Coyote created human beings; and a story from an unnamed tribe of the Northwest Coast about the Thunderbird. The remaining five entries are a varied lot: the Tsimshian people of British Columbia tell why wolves chase deer; the Iroquois explain the transition from winter to spring; the Pima contribute another Coyote story; a Lakota legend explores the origins of love music and the flute; and finally, a Pawnee story tells about death and heaven. The title page of each selection features a generic mishmash of ``Indian'' pictographs in a border design that has no relation to any of the stories. However, each tale also sports at least one full-page, full-color illustration that does a fine job of capturing a described event. Full of magic and in the spirit of John Sibbick's illustrations for Marion Wood's Spirits, Heroes and Hunters from North American Indian Mythology (Peter Bedrick, 1992), these engaging paintings bring the stories to life. This optional volume in an already crowded field offers notes and a further reading list, but no sources.-Lisa Mitten, University of Pittsburgh, PA
