The thyroid, one of the body’s most important glands, can become extremely disruptive if it malfunctions, affecting blood pressure, heart rate, fertility, muscle tone, mood swings, and much more. Upon discovering that she’d joined the ranks of the nearly 5 million Americans diagnosed with hypothyroidism, author Maureen Pratt took charge and educated herself on every aspect of her condition. Now, as a “patient-expert,” she guides those newly diagnosed step-by-step through their first year with hypothyroidism. She provides crucial information about the nature of the disease, treatment options, diet, exercise, social concerns, emotional issues, networking with others, charts, tables, and much more. The First Year™—Hypothyroidism is an invaluable guide for everyone learning to live with their diagnosis. For everyone newly diagnosed with hypothyroid disease, this is an indispensable guide to prioritizing the key things you need to do and learn.

People who are seeking out books about hypothyroidism have a lot to choose from. So, I thought I'd write a few words about my contribution to the available literature and what its focus is.
I wrote "The First Year: Hypothyroidism" to be a practical, encouraging roadmap for anyone who is newly diagnosed with hypothyroidism. The information included comes from interviews with medical experts and patients who have the disease, as well as research that has been conducted by medical professionals throughout the world. I've also added my personal experiences, as someone who has lived with first hyperthyroidism and now hypothyroidism for 30+ years and done so in a very positive, humor-filled way. In fact, we hypothyroid patients can take heart that the condition is far less complicated, better-diagnosed, treated, and controlled than so many other chronic illnesses today!
Along with hypothyroidism, I have systemic lupus erythematosus, thrombocytopenia, and other serious chronic illnesses. Some hypothyroid patients (by no means not all) also live with other autoimmune/chronic conditions, so in "The First Year: Hypothyroidism," I have included tips on balancing and coping with multiple chronic health challenges.
As with any roadmap, there are many avenues that one can take along the journey with hypothyroidism. Not every patient will experience every symptom, problem or life event I've included in this book. But my hope is that it will provide fundamental, medically-based information that can help a patient navigate the road through that first year - and beyond!
