9781569473108: Property of Blood

The American-born founder of a prominent fashion house, Contessa Olivia Brunamonti, is mistaken for her daughter and kidnapped by a group of Sardinian shepherds. They’re holding her deep in the Tuscan hills and have demanded a huge sum for her return. Her daughter failed to report the incident for over a week, and the family’s assets have been frozen by an Italian government that forbids paying ransom. But the kidnappers can’t release their victim without being paid—it would set a bad precedent. And Guarnaccia suspects another problem: Could it be that Olivia’s children don’t want to save their mother? Is this more than just a random crime?

About the Author:

Magdalen Nabb was born in Lancashire and trained as a potter. In 1975, she left her old life behind and moved with her son to Florence, where she fell in love with the local setting.
Her Marshal Guarnaccia series, which has been translated into ten languages, was inspired by a real local marshal she befriended in the tiny pottery town of Montelupo Fiorentino. Nabb wrote children’s fiction and crime novels until her death in 2007.

Review:

Praise for Property of Blood

"The exquisite sensibility of Magdalen Nabb's police procedurals has all to do with the feeling of displacement that haunts her sensitively observed characters . . . Although Nabb sees beauty in the grand palazzi of Florence and the green hills of Tuscany, she finds meaning in the empty landscapes people walk alone."
—The New York Times Book Review

“Credible, classy and compelling, this is crime fiction at its best.”
The Sunday Times

"Elegant in style and elegant of mind . . . [Nabb] is a fine writer with a sharp intelligence and deep sensitivity to human pain and frailty."
—Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

"Before Dibdin's Aurelio Zen or Leon's Guido Brunetti, there was Magdalen Nabb's Salvatore Guarnaccia . . . Fans of crime Italian style who don't know this series are in for a treat."
—Booklist

"Once again employing the pared-down skills of a Simenon, Nabb’s 11th outing for Florence’s Marshal Salvatore Guarnaccia demonstrates that the carabinieri’s best investigative technique is silence . . . Well-written and emotionally acute."
—Kirkus Reviews

"Does not disappoint . . . Nabb is a superlative writer whose low-key protagonist carries the investigation forward flawlessly and without pretention."
—Reviewing the Evidence

Praise for Magdalen Nabb

"Exquisite."
The New York Times Book Review

"Every word should be savored."
Washington Post Book World

"The best mystery news in ages is that Soho is restoring to the canon Magdalen Nabb and her tremendous creation, Marshal Guarnaccia of the Italian Police in Florence."
Chicago Tribune

"Nabb continues to extend conventions of the police procedural to suit her own intriguing vision and purpose."
Philadelphia Inquirer
