Synopsis

  • The people of the village of Tepes once cowered in fear beneath the shadow of the Nobility manor. Reviews

Grade 10 Up—This is a manga adapation of the second volume in Kikuchi's multimedia series of the same name. One hundred centuries from now, following a devastating battle with vampires known as the Nobility, humankind has reverted to a near-medieval society. Outposts of humanity are still at risk from the supernatural and scientific legacy of the Nobility and the towns hire Hunters to protect themselves. Like a lone gunman of the Old West, Vampire Hunter D rides into one such town, vowing to clean it up, for a fee. This stoic, intelligent, and lethal Hunter teams up with a local girl who is destined for great things due to her high test scores. There is plenty of set-up and pay off in the story, while the dramatic and kinetic artwork carries the pair forward. This gothic, action-packed, and mysterious tale is sure to have lots of appeal, but its strong violence and sexual imagery make it best suited to the older teens.—Douglas P.
