Grade 5 Up-Inspirational and easy to read, this guide gives teenage girls ideas for many health-related occupations and career paths. Physicians, nursing specialists, a dentist, a personal trainer, a nuclear medical technologist, a physical therapist assistant, and a clinical dietitian are all represented. Each chapter profiles an individual in an interesting and dynamic job attained through years of investigating, learning, and hard work. Along with each profile, the authors present some career-preparatory advice, a few choices for further reading, and lists of professional organizations to contact for more information. Recent salary ranges are included, plus sidebars that give historical facts about women who have left their marks on contemporary medicine. Each chapter also gives a time line of the professional's career path as well as a checklist of the personal qualities that indicate potential suitability for each line of work. Blythe Camenson's Real People Working in Health Care (VGM Career, 1997) and Lois Edwards's Great Careers for People Interested in the Human Body (UXL, 1993) give similar kinds of information, but they are not specifically aimed at female audiences. This current resource goes beyond the educational and training requirements and gets into the heart and soul of what it takes to succeed in this field.
