9781570470165: Exploring the Lost Maya

The most complete history of ancient Maya civilization available on CD-ROM. The title explores the history, culture, and demise of ancient Maya city-states, covering 37 sites in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize. The CD includes over 500 captioned photographs, over 30 minutes of video, mini-documentaries, public domain illustration and photography from the 19th century, interactive site maps, slide shows, original music, narration, a timeline, and 360 panoramas of important sites. This is the second title in the Ancient Cities series, spanning the period from 2000 BC to AD 1500. In-depth slide shows cover architecture, sculpture, ceramics, and history. Leading Maya scholar Robert Sharer, Ph.D, acted as technical editor for the product and wrote the historical reference as well as site histories for the entire product.

From the Publisher:

Photographed over two years in five countries and several museums, the editor and author sought to bring a complete history of Maya civilization to market on CD ROM. The product provides exhaustive photography and history on many aspects of Maya civilization and culture, and like other of the publishers titles, allows the reader to export and reuse on their own computer, all of the photography, maps, and video. A rare attempt by an independent CD ROM publisher to produce a historical treatment of broad scope, significantly more complete than many of the books sold in the marketplace today.

"At the close of the Preclassic period, major upheavals occurred in the economic and political order. Old centers declined or were abandoned altogether, and new capitals began rising to power. In the southern area, some of these changes were caused by sudden shifts in trade routes, in response to a catastrophic eruption of the Ilopango volcano in what is now central El Salvador."
