One evening after supper, I was filled with an overwhelming feeling: "What's it all about?" Every day seemed so rushed with daily details and responsibilities. When evening-time arrived, I questioned whether our family was experiencing quality time as my husband and I tried to teach table manners to our five-year-old while dodging flying food from our toddler.
I thought how terrific it would be if there was a game our whole family could play. One that would be easy to learn and noncompetitive, one that would essentially have no 'wrong' answers, one that would be simple to set up--no cards to keep track of, game board to store, or dice and tiny playing pieces that we would eventually lose, and, finally, one that would allow us to relax and be ourselves.
While my husband Bernie gave the girls their bath, I began jotting down questions that I thought even my youngest could answer (in some fashion, considering she was only two.) After their bath, we played about fifteen minutes of the beginning of The Happy Family Game. As Bernie stood up and shouted, "YES!" after responding to Game Selection page 163, our daughters began to giggle, and the mood of the evening shifted into a relaxed, happy time. We were spending Quality Time as a family!
As time went on, our little family game became The Happy Family Game. And even today, Bernie and I remark how something very special happens when our family plays this game: we always have fun, learn something new about each other, and feel a little closer as a family.
