While I enjoy each season of the Southern Appalachian year, spring is my favorite or at least the one I most eagerly anticipate. The excitement and challenges of winter stimulate me, but also wear me down at times. The first snow I eagerly greet, and the second and third, but from the tenth to the twentieth my appreciation is more and more heavily tinged with weariness. I yearn for the first bluebird of the season and the first warm breezes to break the chill that lingers over Greasy Creek.
This collection of essays and photographs celebrates the season of renewal in the mountains.
Michael Joslin moved to the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina in 1983. Since then he has written and illustrated with his photography five books that celebrate mountain life. Mountain Spring, his sixth book, is the first in a new series that takes the reader on an in-depth journey through Appalachia's seasons.
