The controlled stretching of muscles has been an integral part of the training of human athletes for many years, and scientific studies and results in the field have both proven beyond doubt the value of stretch exercise in improving performance and guarding against injury. Active stretching both before and after exercise helps tone the muscles and ensure a good range of movement, and no professional athlete would ever expect to perform at full potential without it—yet riders ask their horses to do so all the time.
Following extensive research into the subject, occupational therapist and equestrian trainer Karin Blignault has written this innovative and thought-provoking book to show how the principles so long applied to human athletes can also be applied to the horse to prevent injury, alleviate pain, and improve performance.
Blignault thoroughly explains the basic anatomy and physiology of muscles and their associated tissues, how muscles work together in groups, and which exercises benefit which muscles. The individual exercises are explained in detail, with clear, specific instructions designed to ensure that they are carried out with no risk of injury to horse or human.
Stretch Exercises for Your Horse will be of great interest to all owners and trainers of sport horses, and, indeed, to all those who wish to contribute to the constructive development of the horses they ride.

A professional human athlete would never expect to perform at full potential without a proper stretching warm–up, yet riders ask this of their horses all the time. In Stretch Exercises for Your Horse, occupational therapist and equestrian trainer Karin Blignault illustrates how the controlled stretching of muscles long used to enhance human athletic performance can also be applied to the horse to prevent injury, alleviate pain, and improve performance. The individual exercises are explained in detail, with clear instructions providing the basic anatomy and physiology of the muscles, which exercises benefit which muscles, and the fundamental principles of performing both passive stretches from the ground and active stretching exercises from the saddle. All the exercises are designed to ensure that they are carried out in the most beneficial manner, with no risk or injury to horse or human. Karen Blignault lives in Cape Town, South Africa. Her previous book was Successful Schooling—Train Your Horse with Empathy.
An Equestrian Edge Book Club Main SelectionAbout the Author:
Karin Blignault was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, where she still lives. Always passionately interested in animals, she started riding in her early twenties and studied under a number of eminent trainers, her studies bringing competitive success in showjumping, horse trials, and dressage. She remains active at a high level in dressage, and teaches riding.
Having studied occupational therapy, Karin took a diploma in the education of children with learning difficulties and began to study neuro-developmental therapy. Parallels between her studies and key concepts of classical equitation led to the writing of her first book, Successful Schooling: Train Your Horse with Empathy. Now, further combining her skills with the latest research, she has produced Stretch Exercises for Your Horse, a book which shows how techniques long considered invaluable to human athletes can be applied with great benefit to that equine gymnast—the modern sport horse.
