Ages 5^-8. Some big words (fulminating) and some dark humor in Ungerer's sly poke at television, among other things, make for a spooky sort of read-aloud. Tortoni Tremolo, a musician of many instruments, offends his neighbor Madame Abrah Kadabrah with his practicing, so she puts a curse on him that turns all his notes into nuggets like olives. They make such a mess that he is thrown out of his apartment and has to live in "a forlorn cabin beyond the boondocks in the middle of nowhere." He discovers that the musical nuggets are good to eat and that each kind of music produces a different taste, so he goes into mass production. When he appears on TV, however, his notes jam up and explode all the televisions, "oozing a disgusting dribble carrying a fetid stink." So people go back to reading books, playing games, and having home-cooked meals. Madame Abrah then cancels the spell, which was not supposed to make him happy. He sells the note factory and opens a symphony hall. The illustrations are properly weird, with acid colors and exaggerated gestures. The last line notes that curses can take their own course: indeed, as Tortoni conducts his symphony, alert children will note that the horns have some thick orange and green stuff where the notes should be coming out.
