Gr 1-3-All of these books offer a little bit of history, some helpful suggestions for supplies, and several very simple projects for budding young artists. Well laid out, they have colorful illustrations and photographs that add interest and help children visualize the techniques. The only minor flaw is the annoying technique of adding pronunciations to some words in the text. For example, Watercolors begins, "If you've never painted with watercolors (WAH ter KUH lurz)-." Okay, if they're unfamiliar with the term, how did they read the title or find the book? Other words that are pronounced include tint (TINT) and "wet-on-wet technique" (WET on WET tek NEEK). This just seems like a needless exercise and detracts from otherwise interesting texts. Judy Martin's Painting and Drawing (Millbrook, 1993) is livelier and contains more information and different activities, including such kid-proven popular projects as collages.-Dona J.
