With tongue firmly in cheek, Shelley Duvall produces this addition to the American Tall Tales and Legends series, based loosely on the adventures of 14th-century Spanish explorer Ponce de León. With nary a trace of serious historical documentary in sight, this slapstick comedy--reminiscent of summer stock theater--doesn't take itself seriously and neither should we. Thus, with proper expectations set, viewers can take sardonic pleasure in the delicious blend of Monty Pythonesque humor, general buffoonery ("If you don't come back alive, I'm going to kill you"), and comedic references to everything from chocolate bunnies to the Beatles. Adventures begin when the title character turns 45 and decides to avoid a medieval midlife crisis by embarking on an expedition to discover the Fountain of Youth. Never mind that he discovers Florida instead (with an accompanying array of retirement community jokes). The expedition is fraught with alligator-infested swamps, restless natives, and a conniving pirate named Lucy who hopes to best Ponce at his own game. Funny to the end, the film's only serious moment is its insightful statement on our society's incessant quest for eternal youth. --Lynn Gibson
