Gr. 7^-10. This sequel to Walker of Time finds Walker, a twentieth-century Hopi teenager who traveled 750 years back in time to rescue his people, the Sinagua Indians, beginning the next phase of his mission. He must lead his tribe from its contaminated water supply across the desert to the land of the Hopi. Walker is prepared to face the challenges of nature, but when old enemies join forces with new, the journey becomes even more treacherous, and Walker learns that human greed and jealousy have been destructive forces throughout history. Vick's writing was good before; it's better now--crisp description sets the scene, and effective images create not only atmosphere, but also conflict, providing motivation for these ancient peoples so driven by superstition. Walker's development across the two books is believable, touching, and a little sad. He has grown to meet his responsibility but lost his youth along the way. It's best that readers begin with the first book, since this one doesn't recap Walker's travel back in time, and fans can almost certainly expect another episode. Jeanne Triner
