A witty and irreverent tour through the metaphysics of coincidence, the possibilities of probability, and the facts of fate. Following the Greek model of the Fates who control the fortune of human beings, Benitez shows us how to look for ways to out wit the Fates in order to gain more control over our lives--putting us less at the mercy of chance and enabling us to attract some old-fashioned good luck.

Many years ago, perhaps moved by a vague attempt to cure myself of my superstitious approach to life, I began to read every book I could get my hands on about superstitions. I didn’t cure myself of my superstition. In fact, I became more superstitious than ever. As I learned of new superstitions I had never heard of before, I realized that my failure to observe some of them was probably contributing to and perpetuating my perennially precarious financial situation.
Gradually, I began to accept my superstitions -- to accept and recognize that they performed a legitimate function. I decided to write this book, to share my momentous discoveries with others. Nobody that I know of has ever seriously delved into the subject of superstition from a superstitious point of view before. I have left it to others to catalogue superstitions and expound on their origin and meaning. Instead I have focused on the effects and results of observing or not observing superstitious practices and beliefs. My belief is that superstition is something that has been instilled in the human race for a purpose, and that it was at one time as important for the survival of the human race as instinct is for the survival of many insect and animal species. It still has its importance today. Rich, powerful, wealthy and healthy people don’t need superstition. But if you’re like me, then you should regard superstition as something that is as essential and necessary for a ! happy and successful life as a sensible diet.
An important fact that I would like to make clear about this book is that I am entirely serious about my viewpoints on the importance of superstition in the daily conduct of our lives. I hope this book will be seen as a profound receptacle of philosophical and scholarly information.
