The era of the 1960s was one of the most tumultuous times in American history. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. The Civil Rights movement increased in intensity all during the decade, and there was a minor conflict in Southeast Asia that became a major war involving U.S. forces by 1965.

Jerome Doherty was an average all-American college student in 1960 when he began training for service in the U.S. Marine Corps. After completing officer training in 1964, he was assigned to an infantry battalion that was shipped to the island of Okinawa for training; however, an incident off the coast of Vietnam causes the unit to get orders to land in South Vietnam, where it is feared that communists from North Vietnam are poised to take over the country.

Thrust into an unknown country and culture, Doherty is faced with the challenges of protecting both himself and the Marines under his command while fighting a war unlike any other in history. Unflinchingly honest and uncompromisingly real, A Civilian in Green Clothes is not just the story of one man, but the tale of an entire generation.

From the Back Cover:
A Civilian in Green Clothes is the true-life account of one ordinary man living in extraordinary times--America in the 1960s.

The tale begins with Jerome Doherty at a Midwestern university, then follows him through officer training school for the U.S. Marine Corps. He hopes his time in the military will bring him international travel and adventure, but he finds himself in a completely unexpected adventure as the U.S. campaign against communism escalates. Doherty is soon shipped off to the Far East and, ultimately, to Vietnam--- a place that will change him forever.
