Alexander Anolik, Esq. is president of the largest U.S. law corporation emphasizing the practice of travel law and travel industry litigation. From his San Francisco offices, he has represented thousands of traveling consumers, travel agents, travel suppliers, and government tourism offices throughout his career. His books include The Law and the Travel Industry, the first comprehensive travel law textbook, now in its fifth edition.
Anolik co-founded the International Forum of Travel and Tourism Advocates (IFTTA), a global organization of travel industry attorneys, and served as IFTTA's president for seven years. He has conducted seminars throughout the world on travel, tourism, and hospitality law, as well as travel law classes at Cornell University, Golden Gate University, the University of Hawaii, and San Francisco State University.
Anolik serves as general counsel of the Association of Retail Travel Agents, the largest nonprofit trade association in North America that represents travel agents exclusively. He is co-editor of IFTTA News, a global newsletter for travel attorneys and the former travel law editor for Travel Agent Magazine. He has appeared regularly as a travel law commentator for ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, particularly the shows "48 Hours," "Inside Edition," and "Dateline."
Anolik earned his law degree from the University of California (Hastings College of the Law), with graduate legal studies at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law (Boalt Hall) and at the Academia Internationalis Lex ex Scientia, The Hague, Netherlands. He is a member of the bar in California and the District of Columbia and is admitted to practice in several U.S. district courts, the U.S. Tax Court, and the U.S. Supreme Court. You can reach Mr. Anolik at: www.TravelLaw.com.
John K. Hawks is Executive Director of the Consumer Travel Rights Center (www.mytravelrights.com), the largest U.S. nonprofit group dedicated solely to defending and expanding the legal rights of travelers.
He serves also as president of the Association of Retail Travel Agents. He has written several books on travel and tourism issues, including Career Opportunities in Travel and Tourism and Youth Exchanges: The Complete Guide to the Homestay Experience Abroad-both published by Facts on File.
He currently resides in Tennessee.
In this dry but comprehensive volume, Anolik and Hawks have collected everything a seasoned traveler could ever need, from an in-depth discussion of the legal issues involved in traveling to tips on scoring that promised beach-view hotel room. The thoroughness they apply to the laws and regulations governing travel for American citizens is especially noteworthy. During these uneasy times, for example, many readers will be pleased to learn how to contact the obscure American Citizen Services and Crisis Management division of the State Department. And although the book's prose is hardly inspiring-those looking for a vivid armchair traveling companion should turn elsewhere-frequent travelers who know that today "one flight in forty has been cancelled, and one in four flights will not arrive on time" will find that the guide can truly help navigate all the technical ins and outs. There are sections on air travel, rental cars, hotel rooms, cruises, travel tours, international travel, travel agents, travel insurance, travel crimes and discrimination in traveling. Nearly every chapter ends with a comprehensive list of addresses and phone numbers for contacting airlines, hotels and the like. Casual travelers may find all the information they need in more user-friendly guidebooks; nonetheless, this volume is an excellent resource for those who travel often and widely.
