Grade 2-In a reassuringly repetitive text written in rhyming quatrains, a boy and his dog walk along the river bank and observe the wildlife, both plants and animals, including eagles, lynxes, coyotes, and muskrats. At journey's end, the boy's grandfather is waiting. The illustrations are warm, blending black outlines and shading with soft-edged, washlike swatches of color. Some adults might question the boy's solo trip in an environment inhabited by lynxes and coyotes, but children are more likely to feel a "safe" thrill of fear and excitement, comforted by the calm and measured temper of the narration and the grandfather's presence at the end. An appropriate selection for schools and libraries. Coop Renner, Paul C. Moreno Elementary School, El Paso, TX
