But the Song is more than just a love ballad. There is a deep wisdom in the Song, which offers an antidote to our sex-saturated but wholly unsatisfied world . . . an answer to our search for the meaning of human sexuality. At its most literal level, reflecting on the passion and energy of new love, the Song offers you a refreshing, inspiring picture of how God intended man and woman to come together as husband and wife

From the Back Cover:

Song of a Longing Heart

Deep in the heart of the Old Testament lies a strange and beautiful collection of poems known as the Song of Songs. Arguably the most lovely and lyrical book in Scripture, its bold celebration of human intimacy and passion also makes it one of the most startling. So what is this book doing in the Bible?

In Song of a Longing Heart, David Roper leads you on an illuminating journey into the richly detailed text. He offers fresh insights and historical context that help you peel back the literal and symbolic layers to reveal a love song that rings true even today.

But the Song is more than just a love ballad. There is a deep wisdom in the Song, which offers an antidote to our sex-saturated but wholly unsatisfied world...an answer to our search for the meaning of human sexuality.

While Song of Songs has often been considered an allegorical representation of divine-human love, Roper makes a convincing case for also interpreting the poem as a stirring exchange between newlyweds. At its most literal level, reflecting all the passion and energy of new love, the Song offers us a refreshing, inspiring picture of how God intended man and woman to come together as husband and wife.

As Roper puts it, "The Song can be understood on two levels--divine and human. The bridegroom symbolizes God, but he is also every man; the bride symbolizes the soul, but she is every woman. As Paul would say ,"This is a great mystery."

There is truly no song like it in the world.
