9781574327694: Dazzling Stars: A Galaxy of Block Patterns

Finally, a frustration-free method of making perfect-point star blocks. Eight-pointed stars are now as easy to piece as Nine-Patch blocks. Based on the popular 12 inch block size, the dozens of original designs are made with rotary cutting techniques and templates that avoid bulky seams and set-in patches. Achieve stellar results by learning to use color and fabric more effectively. Expand your universe by experimenting with kaleidoscope effects, 3-D stars, and star-within-a-star. Features 48 dazzling star blocks with a multitude of celestial projects, from wallhanging to bed-size. A galaxy of possibilities for quilters of every skill level. AUTHORBIO: Victoria Stuart is an award-winning professional freelance writer. Her articles have been published in Quilter's Newsletter Magazine, Quilting International, Quilting Today, and many others. Carleen Demshok Parlato was Victoria's first quilting teacher in 1988. 'I was the worst student in the class; I didn't even know what a running stitch was! But I got hooked on quilting before we were halfway through the first lesson!' AUTHORBIO: Carleen Demshok Parlato is a quiltmaker, quilt teacher, and past president of the Ocean Waves (Miami) Chapter of the National Quilting Association. Her Dazzling DreamStar block won the 1992 Fairfield Processing Corporation's 'Star Gazing' Quilt Block Contest, and her quilt made of DreamStars, Order and Chaos, was selected as part of the Hoffman Challenge National Tour. Carleen has taught quiltmaking at South Florida quilting guilds, in community schools, in craft stores, and in quilt shops. REVIEW: Like so many of us, the two authors are fascinated with stars. They have created 48 star blocks that can be pieced as 9-patch units, reducing or eliminating the bulky seams in the center that often plague complex star blocks. These stars have some unusual shapes and the book includes complete instructions for assembling the different combinations. A hugh Gallery section show many possiblities for using star blocks. This is not a book for beginners...

Victoria Stuart is an award-winning professional freelance writer. Her articles have been published in Quilters Newsletter Magazine, Quilting International, Quilting Today, and many others. Carleen Demshok Parlato was Victoria's first quilting teacher in 1988. "I was the worst student in the class; I didn't even know what a running stitch was! But I got hooked on quilting before we were halfway through the first lesson! Then I attended my first quilt show, and I knew this would become a lifelong passion." Today, Victoria is a quilt teacher for The Quilt Scene in Miami, Florida, specializing in updated versions of antique quilt patterns. She is a past president of the Ocean Waves Chapter, NQA, where she has been an active member since 1989.

Carleen Demshok Parlato is a quiltmaker, quilt teacher, and past president of the Ocean Waves (Miami) Chapter of the National Quilting Association. A beginning quiltmaking class at her local quilt shop first set Carleen on her path to the stars. Since then, she has completed dozens of quilts and won several awards, including Quilter of the Year from the Ocean Waves Chapter of the National Quilting Association. Her Dazzling DreamStar block won the 1992 Fairfield Processing Corporation's "Star Gazing" Quilt Block Contest, and her quilt made of DreamStars, Order and Chaos, was selected as part of the Hoffman Challenge National Tour in 1992. Carleen has taught quiltmaking at South Florida quilting guilds, in community schools, in craft stores, and in quilt shops. She has lectured to groups all around her state, and she is well recognized for her commitment to organizing community service projects to create and distribute quilts to orphans, disadvantaged children, and women's shelters. A nurse practitioner with extensive experience, as well as a wife and mother of two children, Carleen recently fulfilled another goal when she earned a black belt in karate.
