Beginning with her austere childhood, Ransom traces von Trapp's life in Austria and in America, where she toured extensively with her family of singers and later set up a camp and ski lodge in Vermont. Clearly written and illustrated with black-and-white photographs, the book gives a sense of Maria's forceful personality as well as the events in her life. An author's note, a chronology, a bibliography, and source notes are appended. Recommended for Sound of Music fans who want to know what really happened and, of course, what happened next. Grade 4-6-A readable, intriguing, and straightforward biography based on Trapp's own writings. The subject is portrayed as a spunky, fun-loving, and creative woman who endured difficult times and bravely faced adversity. Trapp's story is extended to include the musical career her family began in Europe and continued in the United States, as well as the music-camp business they created on their property in Vermont. Short chapters in a large-print format sprinkled with photographs make this an inviting and easily comprehensible biography. An author's note explains Ransom's research and her approach to writing this work.
