Grade 2-4–Little Wolf, his brother, and his friends are back. This time, the gang is in search of Blackfur the Backbiter's lost pirate treasure. Through letters that L. Wolf writes to his parents, readers get a humorous look at their exploits. Of course, the loose cannon in all of Little Wolf's sea adventures is his younger brother, Smellybreff. When the two are captured by the notorious "pie rate" Captain Froshus, Smells tells all in exchange for candy. He is made cabin cub while Little Wolf must swab the decks and clean the head. In the end, the cubs and their friends save the treasure, using pirate tactics of S.S.T. (surprise, speed, and terror). Some of the humor comes from the words that Little Wolf cobbles together or uses imaginative spelling to create, such as "hidinginabarrelly" or "uptomyneckly," which might make the story beyond the skills of children beginning chapter books, but it would make a good read-aloud. Ross's pen-and-ink drawings capture the amusing details of the various situations. Purchase where the series is popular.–Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR
