About the Author:

Carl Sommer is an educator and an award-winning writer as well as a successful businessman who is an outspoken advocate for teaching children fundamental values. His landmark book 20 years ago, Schools in Crisis, landed him on the Oprah Winfrey Show. His newest book, Character Under Attack & What You Can Do About It, is based on his vast experience in education. Sommer was a substitute teacher at some of the worst New York City schools, teaching all grades in 27 schools that spanned all five boroughs. He also worked as an assistant dean of boys, served on the Texas State Board of Education Review Committee, and taught a junior achievement economics course at Prague University in Czech Republic. His company, Advanced Publishing, Inc., has published 20 of Sommer’s character education children’s books. All books have won awards and critical acclaim from peer educators, parents, and the media. The awards include: Children’s Choice Award, Benjamin Franklin Award, and iParenting Media Award. He has written a series of books that promote reading (a phonics literature-based program) for adults and another for children. His Number Success series consists of 13 books and 47 videos, providing a complete education in practical mathematics. Expected release for these literacy materials is 2005. He has written over 100 books. Sommer served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. At age 40, he became a New York City public high school teacher. To become a certified teacher, he attended Oswego State University, City College of New York, and New York University. Sommer also became an assistant dean of boys in a high school with 3,600 pupils where he counseled students and parents. As Sommer taught, he saw the many deficiencies of the educational system and began to investigate the system. Identifying the problems and needs of America’s students, he proceeded to craft solutions. His exhaustive ten-year study, including a one-year leave of absence from teaching, led to his first book, published in 1984—Schools in Crisis: Training for Success or Failure? Sommer is the founder and president of Advance Publishing, Inc., Digital Cornerstone, (recording and video studio), and Reliable EDM, where precision machining is done by means of electrical discharge machining, is the largest company of its kind west of the Mississippi. Sommer, 73, resides in Houston, Texas. He’s been married for 49 years and has five children and 14 grandchildren. He is in excellent health and exercises five times a week.
