There are three important times for individuals and organizations: their birth, their death, and the life between. We have the opportunity to be active only during the third time: the life. Thus, important questions to be raised are: What are we doing for life? Are we progressing slowly toward death, simply letting things happen? Or are we in a permanent transformation process, bringing meaning to life? These questions are relevant for you as a person, as well as for the organization in which you are a participant.I believe in people and their ability to perform miracles. Are there specific ways to make miracles happen and initiate a rebirth? My experience in the field of quality has shown that three elements are important for successful transformation. First, you need to develop a culture that will create an environment favorable to performing miracles. Such an environment fosters an understanding of why things are being done in a different way. A specific vocabulary is needed for expressing new modes of thinking. It is interesting to note how we have many words to speak about business, sales, and money, but very few to speak about the “essential of your life” or spirituality. Our culture is a whole set of concepts, history, definitions, and values. We have to learn from our past experiences and history. The second element needed for transformation is a set of processes to initiate necessary changes. These processes also give you a direction and give warnings of any dangerous curves in the road ahead. Processes lead you day-by-day to your dream. The third element is a set of tools that allows you to address the reality and make your processes operational. Wishful thinking is different from vision creation. A vision must be translated into practice for it to have an effect on reality. Transformational tools and methodologies are needed for this translation. The first book in this series, The Transformation Desktop Guide, focused on the transformational culture and some specific tools. This second book, The Transformation Fieldbook, gives an in-depth look at the second two elements mentioned above: processes and tools that will help you to create a new reality. The area of transformation is a new field in which discovery will continue and new research will bring even more ways of getting things done. As we understand transformation further, we must be open to the concept of equal finality. There isn't just one right way to do things, so we must take into account all the different sciences and skills available to see how they can operate in a practical way in an organization.
