Grade 3-5-These books are good, brief introductions but do not contain information that isn't readily available elsewhere. The basics of each aspect of the Revolution are covered in clear, engaging prose, in one- to two-page chapters, without a great deal of supplementary material. Early Battles recounts the first skirmishes, showing how the Americans did not plan to have a full-scale war or a clean break with England. Events discusses some of the causes of the war, emphasizing the British economic measures that angered the colonists. Final Years covers the major battles of the Revolution, noting some statistics and strategies. Many of the full-color photos are of historical reenactments, but a few are not labeled as such. Some other artwork also lacks credits. Each book lists the same two Web sites as a resource. While the format and brevity of these titles may make them less intimidating for emerging chapter-book or reluctant readers, youngsters would have to read the entire set to get a full picture of the period. Where more detail is required, or one volume is more desirable, Kathlyn and Martin Gay's Revolutionary War (21st Century, 1995) is a better choice.
