PreS-Gr 1-These simple, formulaic books are designed to teach basic shapes through a minimum of text. The full-color photographs show everyday objects that will be familiar to most beginning readers. For example, "Circles are round [a picture of a child looking through a magnifying glass]./Some circles make sound [a photo of a CD]./This circle tells time [a clock face]./This circle is a dime./This circle you can eat [a pizza]./These circles are a treat [cookies on a cookie sheet]./Our circle is really neat [six kids shown with their arms linked and heads together]." That's essentially the text, and the other three titles follow suit. Breakdown indexes of the books' nouns and verbs and word families round out the presentations. The introduction of parts of speech seems out of place in such basic concept books. Serviceable, but mighty slim additions.-Lennie Hurst, Greene County Tech Primary, Paragould, AR
