Count Your Cookies
It's Saturday--baking day at Harry's house. Harry's mother makes yummy cookies, cakes, and tarts, but somehow, his big sister, Laura, always seems to eat more that her share. It's just not fair! Will Harry ever manage to have the last laugh--and the biggest bite? This mouth-watering story shows that it's quality, not quantity that counts. At the same time, it helps children learn math concepts such as counting, fractions, and part versus whole. Count Your Cookies is a welcome addition to any math curricula.
A yummy story that'll make readers' mouths water as it teaches math concepts.

PreSchool-Grade 1-Every Saturday, Harry and Laura's mom bakes "treats, yummy, yummy treats." The children are told they may have some as long as they divide them fairly. The first week, Laura asks her younger brother if he wants one gingerbread man or two. She gives him "two small, broken pieces" and keeps one larger cookie for herself. Thereafter, she offers him progressively greater numbers ("Five tarts or six, Harry?") but makes sure she always has bigger pieces. Mom allows this to go on for several weeks before tricking Laura into going to bed early while she and Harry eat a big cake together. This story is more successful as a lesson in fairness than as a math teaching tool. In the soft, color illustrations, the cookies, cupcakes, and tarts are shown on small plates, and children will not be inspired to count them or make comparisons. Counting from 1 to 10 is represented on the endpapers, but using this title to teach fractions would be a stretch; the children deal with miscellaneous broken pieces, not equally divided wholes. Even the numerous exclamation points in the text will not generate much excitement.
