Synopsis

Many early settlers described the area that was to become Largo, Florida, as little more than pines and palmettos. But they also had a dream. You are invited to walk the pathways with some of those visionaries, both old and modern, who carved a thriving city of eighty thousand from those meager Southern flatwoods. From its birth as a town of less than two hundred people in 1905, through its evolution into a city, Largo has been known by many mottos: "Citrus City", "Fair City", "Hub of Peerless Pinellas", "Clean Air Capital", and most recently and appropriately, the "City of Progress". These are the main chapter divisions of FROM PINES AND PALMETTOS. First however, those people and events that contributed to the formation of Largo are introduced - the prehistoric period, native population, and early explorers, as well as the first settlers who carved a town from pines and palmettos. Stories are shared of a few of the many Largo residents who have shaped this community in recent years, as well as firsthand accounts of its history by some of those who lived it. In conclusion are stories relating the past and present struggles by many local people to preserve Largo's historical buildings and neighborhoods.
