About the Author:

Scott Whipple is the Social Science Department coordinator and classroom teacher at West Salem High School in Salem, Oregon.

Review:

This book is a must-have for teachers, principals, literacy coaches and educators who plan and implement staff development for schools and districts. The activities are classroom tested by the author who is an outstanding teacher and literacy leader in the second largest district in Oregon. Mr. Whipple has defined writing across the curriculum in activities that work with students and will provide valuable assistance in raising student achievement. (John Weeks, director of curriculum, instruction, and assessment, Salem-Keizer Schools, Salem, Oregon)

These kinds of activities help the students understand history in a way they can relate to their own experience. Everything offered is effective and practical, the kind of thing teachers 'can take back to the classroom and implement Monday morning,' as we always say of good in-services. (Laura Perez, curriculum assistant principal, West Salem High School, Salem, Oregon)

This small compendium contains a delightful, comprehensive list of writing activities for social studies teachers. ... This is a very useful little book. (CHOICE)

Imaginative, academically rigorous, and inspirational. (Reference and Research Book News)

For a new teacher this [book] would give them a multitude of ideas to incorporate in their classrooms; for a more seasoned teacher it will refresh their memory of solid ideas gained from past experience...[These] quick, easy to use, engaging activities get students to think and write in the social studies classroom. (Shirley Lomax, president, Oregon Council for Social Science)
