Synopsis

Baxter Magolda (Miami U., Ohio) conducted a longitudinal study of 101 college freshmen, beginning in 1986, to better understand learning and intellectual development during college. Her annual interviews with some of the students continued through their 20s; this work, which includes the stories of 39 of the participants, shows their transformation from external to internal self-definition, what Baxter Magolda calls "the crucial step in moving toward self-authorship" and fulfilling participation in society. From their stories, she draws lessons for educators to help improve the college experience and better prepare students for the complexities of contemporary life. Annotation c.
