Edmund T. Fleming is a certified public accountant and attorney in private practice, specializing in real estate, estate planning, and probate cases. He has been a member of the Chicago Bar Association's Estate Planning and Probate Committees, and he serves as chief of the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board's audit and compliance section. Earlier in his career, he spent ten years as an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service. He lives in Downers Grove, Illinois.
The first book dedicated to both the planning and administering of estates, this indispensable volume offers such tips as:
• a five-step process detailing how to create and implement a sound estate plan
• in-depth coverage of federal tax issues
• money-saving techniques for decreasing estate taxes
• how to fulfill all the necessary federal requirements when settling an estate
• samples of essential forms such as wills, affidavits, powers of attorney, living trusts, and many others The numerous checklists and "true life" examples provide the layperson with indispensable tools for understanding and working through the complete estate planning and administration process. The information contained in this volume is crucial for saving time and money and reducing stress for anyone involved in setting up or handling an estate.
Attorney and certified public accountant Fleming adds a new title to the arsenal of resources on estate planning. Presenting the process as a series of decisions to be made, he methodically provides the information needed to make them. Fleming covers wills, trusts, income and estate taxes, powers of attorney, and the responsibilities of executors and administrators. Each chapter begins with a "points to consider" section containing practical tips, observations, and numerous checklists to help readers assemble documents and understand processes. The appendixes include sample wills, powers of attorney, living trusts, a glossary, and a directory of information sources. Comparable in quality and scope to Dawn Bradley Berry's The Estate Planning Sourcebook (Lowell, 1999) and Denis Clifford and Cora Jordan's Plan Your Estate: Absolutely Everything You Need To Know To Protect Your Loved Ones (Nolo, 2000), this book is good preparation for a meeting with estate-planning professionals.
