That's me, Arrow Investigations. I wanted to change the name to Cat's Paw, Inc., but my sister said no one would get it. It's from an old fable about a cat sleeping by a fire where a monkey was roasting some chestnuts. When the nuts were done, the monkey used the cat's paw to pull them out of the fire so he wouldn't burn his own fingers. People hire me, Zack Smith, to pull their chestnuts out of the fire. This time I have to track down a fourteen-year-old runaway, Jessica. Her trail leads to the streets of Portland, where pimps, drug dealers, and pornographers offer runaways an illusory security in exchange for their innocence--and sometimes their lives....

Review:

From Publishers WeeklyZack Smith, a private investigator based in Mackie, Ore., is hired by Lily and Jason Finney to find their missing teenage daughter, Jessica. Suspecting she's run away to Portland, Smith heads for the city. Scarcely en route, he sees a beautiful young woman walking along the side of the road and offers her a ride. Mysterious, withdrawn and extremely nervous, she identifies herself as Allison Smith. " 'As good a name as any,' " the real Smith tells her. . . .In this fluently written but slightly overplotted first novel, Thrasher leads her charming gumshoe a brisk chase down Portland's meanest streets. Anxious to protect Allison, determined to locate Jessica, Smith is one busy detective whose hard work eventually reaps him some surprising dividends.

From Library JournalThis first novelist contributes a story about teenage runaways and pornography to the publisher's "Brown Bag Mystery" series. Looks good.

From Kirkus ReviewsThe latest entry in the Brown Bag Mystery series features first-time author Thrasher's smooth p.i. caper, which ranges from one end of Oregon to the other. Zack Smith, ex-addict/current private eye, hires on to find the Finney girl, a young teen runaway. Early on, he offers gorgeous hitchhiker Allison a lift and wonders what she's running from.  . . .  Amiably pro forma, with the requisite morally romantic hero, sexual come-ons and conundrums, and flashy patter rather than conversation. Still, diverting and capable of stretching to a series. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

From Kirkus Reviews:

The latest entry in the Brown Bag Mystery series features first-time author Thrasher's smooth p.i. caper, which ranges from one end of Oregon to the other. Zack Smith, ex-addict/current private eye, hires on to find the Finney girl, a young teen runaway. Early on, he offers gorgeous hitchhiker Allison a lift and wonders what she's running from. Does it relate to the murder of mobster Vanzetti? Yup--but was she the reluctant witness to it or the cause? During Portland rain-breaks, Zack uncovers a child-porno ring, dallies with a drama-school coach, and watches as each of his leads to the Finney girl gets murdered. Meanwhile, the Mackie, Oregon, cops want Allison for questioning, but Zack won't admit that he has her. When he finally gets around to handing her over, it's to the wrong cop, who has reasons to want her dead--reasons that tie in, tangentially, with the Finney set-up and Vanzetti blackmailing. Amiably pro forma, with the requisite morally romantic hero, sexual come-ons and conundrums, and flashy patter rather than conversation. Still, diverting and capable of stretching to a series. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
