Synopsis
The scandalous death of Lixie Miller's husband has forced her to flee to Lordsburg, New Mexico. All she wanted to do at first was crawl in a hole and hide. But after a few months of dull routine, her safe hole is beginning to feel like her burial place. Then an interesting attorney comes from Santa Fe just to meet her--and leaves just as quickly as he came. And others need her help, including a hurt Indian girl. Suddenly Lixie has a purpose, but the dangerous circumstances unfolding around her threaten to take it away. Sadly, the second Lordsburg title doesn't come close to having the strength of the first. Lixie Miller, introduced in The Senator's Other Daughter (LJ 2/1/01), is notorious for getting on with her life after discovering her husband, a general, in the arms of another woman a discovery that brought on his fatal heart attack. As the tart-tongued Lixie strives for a peaceful life in Lordsburg, NM, she is hounded by a dime novelist who wants to tell her story (or his version of it). Lixie applies her belief that God loves everyone and ends up caring for a hurt Indian girl no one else wants to help. Unfortunately, the usually entertaining Bly is disappointing here, and a flat romance between Lixie and a Santa Fe attorney and the addition of a vicious outlaw don't liven up the story.
