From the Author Section...
My drive from Baltimore that day seemed longer than usual as my mind raced with the thoughts that my playing days were over. I had struggled for two years to become a regular on the roster and after three weeks into preseason this year, my chances of being signed to a contract were fading. I had a wonderful wife and a bouncing baby boy waiting at home. I loved my job as a web designer and chances are my dog, Jake, would be on the back porch eager to see me after a hard day's work. But the pit in my stomach was telling me "soccer might be over". I pulled off the exit, stared at my cell phone and dialed the coach's number..."Coach. I've decided to step away."
It was one of those moments when I realized I needed to readjust my priorities and begin living life beyond soccer. I was holding on too tight to a boyhood dream. It was time to put God first again and let Him lead.
I believe much of life is about readjusting our priorities and trusting God to help us in our journey. So many times our selfishness and human nature pull us towards doing the things we want to do, while learning to ignore the whisper of what we should do. In my case soccer is a priority that gets in the way. In your case it may be your job, your friends, or just wanting to have fun.
As I pulled back on the highway that afternoon, the vacuum that I thought I'd feel was replaced with a sense of peace. I knew at that moment that God was in control.
The next three months I watched my new baby grow and appreciated every minute. On the weekends I still glanced at my watch in the evenings wondering what the score might be at the Blast game that night. One afternoon in December, I sat working in the office when my cell phone went off behind me. The voice on the other end was the new coach for the Blast, hired just before Christmas half-way through the season..."We are interested in having you give it another go....can you come down for practice in the morning?" At the time I write this book, I recently celebrated winning the national championship with the Blast in Milwaukee. I've learned that life is about letting go and letting God.
I don't know what my future is as a professional soccer player, but I do know who holds the future.
