Reviews

The letters PC, to a growing number of today's initiated, stand for a delightfully easy yet sophisticated craft--polymer clay. Because most practitioners hail from an artistic background, the rules and regulations of sculpture are omitted here. Instead, after a short introduction covering brands of clay, tools, and a few caning techniques, first-time author Pavelka launches into approximately 20 designs. The projects use more than just clay, incorporating stamps, paper, wire, and iridescent powders, among other materials. The imagination behind these projects is just as expansive, ranging from a love magnet card and a tooth fairy box to a baby switch plate and a garden angel. Everything's accounted for in the instructions: four-color step-by-step photographs and easy-to-understand directions. Tips do proliferate, such as attend to light colors first and remember that clay cures (turns hard) at 125 degrees Fahrenheit. Resources and a gallery at the end demonstrate all that polymer clay could be. Barbara Jacobs
