As the years passed and age set in, the climbing became a bit more difficult for them. One year after the old gentleman came alone after his wife passed away. He left a rose at the lighthouse for her each year he continued to visit and climb. As time passed he too became infirm and found it difficult to come alone, so he was brought to Cape Hatteras by his son. Together they would leave a rose, symbolic of their appreciation for this sentinel and in honor of their wife and mother. Recently the son was seen visiting the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. He came alone. He left two roses.
