This project investigated the occurrence and toxicity of algal toxins in drinking water sources in the United States and Australia. The toxins of most concern in the US in order of priority are Microcystins, Anatoxin-a, and Cylindrospermopsin. There has been some concern about health effects from cyanobacteria that may not relate to these known toxins. A possible cause of these reactions is lipopolysaccharide endotoxins. The purpose of this project was threefold: (1) evaluate the methods available for detection of algal toxins, (2) evaluate the significance of lipopolysaccharide endotoxins, and (3) preliminarily assess the extent and the significance of algal toxins in water supplies in the US and Australia. The US Environmental Protection Agency is considering the need to regulate these compounds in the US.
