Cultural Writing. Interviews. POETRY AND POETICS IN A NEW MILLENNIUM follows POSTMODERN POETRY, both of them collections of interviews with American experimental poets. Three of the interviews from the earlier collection are reprinted here together with six more to suggest the range of the avant-garde tradition in contemporary American poetry. Includes interviews with Clark Coolidge, Theodore Enslin, Michael Heller, Eileen Myles, Alice Notley, Maureen Owen, Ron Padgett, Armand Schwerner, Anne Waldman, and Lewis Warsh.

In this collection of recent interviews, Foster (literature, Stevens Inst. of Technology) speaks with Ron Padgett, Anne Waldman, John Yau, and 14 other prominent American poets whose works are considered avant-garde or experimental. The result is often intriguing as poets describe the literary, cultural, and personal influences that have shaped their iconoclastic writing styles. Based upon interviews reprinted from the poetry journal Talisman, where Foster is editor-in-chief, this new collection is a greatly expanded version of Foster's earlier Postmodern Poetry. Though this work is not a necessary purchase, libraries with a strong interest in vanguard poets may wish to consider. For a fine anthology containing poems by many of the poets interviewed here, see Foster's Primary Trouble, edited with Leonard Schwartz and Joseph Donahue (Talisman, 1996).DEllen Sullivan, Ferguson Lib., Stamford, CT
