Microsoft Office XP is Microsoft's suite of application software. The Standard version includes Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. The Professional version includes the above applications plus FrontPage, Access, and Publisher. (Publisher is not covered in this book.) Because Microsoft office is an integrated suite, the components can all be used separately or together to create professional-looking documents and to manage data. The focus of this book is on integrating the Office applications.

How We've Organized the Book

Learning Microsoft Office XP Advanced Skills: An Integrated Approach is made up of seven lessons:

  • Introduction
This short chapter introduces how the applications work together.
  • Lesson 1: Survival Skill Integration
In this lesson, students will create a variety of documents using basic integration skills—each exercise using data from at least two Office applications. Students will create a presentation from a Word outline, embed a chart in a report, insert a table in a presentation, and more.
  • Lesson 2: Productivity Integration
In Lesson 2, the exercises become more complex. Students learn how to integrate features and data from multiple applications. In addition to importing and exporting data between applications, students will work with hyperlinks and mail merge.
  • Lesson 3: Power Integration
The skills in this lesson are more advanced. Students will link Access fields with Word documents, perform conditional mail merges, use e-mail, animate presentations, and use data tracking to link an Excel invoice with an Access database.
  • Lesson 4: Web Page Integration
With Office XP it is easier than ever to create Web pages and to save existing Office documents as Web pages. In this lesson students will create Web pages using Wizards, save a spreadsheet as a Web page, and work with FrontPage to create complete Web sites.
  • Lesson 5: Internet Integration
The Internet is revolutionizing how businesses operate today. In this lesson, students will integrate the Internet with the Office applications—all without an Internet connection. By launching the Internet simulation that comes with the book, students will go to real Web sites, find information, and use that information in their Office documents.
  • Final Integration: Putting It All Together
In this final comprehensive exercise, students will complete a project that includes several activities. The project will include Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel, Outlook, FrontPage, and the Internet.

Each lesson in Learning Microsoft Office XP Advanced Skills is made up of short exercises designed for using Office XP in real-life business settings. Every application exercise (except for the Summary Exercises) is made up of eight key elements:

  • On the Job. Each exercise starts with a brief description of how you would use the features of that exercise in the workplace.
  • Exercise Scenario. The Office tools are then put into context by setting a scenario. For example, you may be manager of a store and you need to create a Web page advertising your products.
  • End Results. The final product is illustrated so students can see how their documents should look.
  • Terms. Key terms are included and defined at the start of each exercise, so you can quickly refer back to them. The terms are then highlighted in the text.
  • Notes. Concise notes for learning the computer concepts.
  • Procedures. Hands-on mouse and keyboard procedures teach all necessary skills.
  • Application Exercises. Step-by-step instructions put your skills to work.
  • On Your Own. Each exercise concludes with a critical-thinking activity that you can work through on your own. You may have to create a personal budget spreadsheet in Excel or a personal Web page in Word. You are challenged to come up with data and then additionally challenged to use the data in a document. The On Your Own sections can be used as additional reinforcement, for practice, or to test skill proficiency.
  • In addition, each lesson ends with a Summary Exercises. As with the On Your Owns, you need to rely on your own skills to complete the task.
