When an uprising occurs in a former Soviet Republic, rebels destroy a most unlikely target--and orphanage--leaving the children to survive on their own in a brutal Russian winter. the U.S. military knows of their plight, but its hands are tied. Jason Kromer, former Navy SEAL and new Christian, has been recruited to lead Operation: Firebrand, a privately funded, covert operations team sent on non-lethal missions of mercy. Their first mission is to rescue the orphaned children--whithout being seen and without taking a life. Only the volatile Firebrand squad, armed with a terrifing array of the latest non-lethal weaponry, is on the verge of collapse, and Kromer has his own demons to subdue. Can he overcome them and forge the hot-tempered commandos into a unit that can come to the rescue?

Jefferson Scott has written several thriller novels, including Fatal Defect and Terminal Logic (Multnomah). A graduate of both seminary and film school, he currently makes his home in the Pacific Northwest, where he writes full time. From Booklist:
Can Christians kill in the name of righteousness? Cynics might answer, throughout history. Still, it's a great question, and in Operation Firebrand, Scott offers for our inspection Jason Kromer, a SEAL sniper who leaves the navy because he has undergone a conversion and is unsure about his secular calling. He becomes the leader of a sort of Christian A-Team, which will soon undertake a mission to Kazakhstan to rescue orphans using nonlethal weapons. The high-tech weapons are entertaining, but the plot is preposterous, and somehow Scott never evokes from Jason the believability of a Sergeant York. Of course, The Guns of Navar one wasn't believable, either, so perhaps what's truly wrong here is Scott's blind faith in the prowess of the military.
