Babushka! Grandmother's Bench is a novel length work set in the former Soviet republics and based on the lives of six Grandmothers, Natasha, Irina, Valentina, Vera, Helena, and Kristina. The wonderfully written stories of these grandmothers come from composites of many elderly women reached by Gray Doves International, a non-profit humanitarian organization helping senior women around the world.
The recent transformation in Russia has not benefited the Babushka. Many of them have been left behind to face the roughest of conditions and abject poverty. In their struggle for survival, we witness the internal strength and spirit of all these women. Despite the conditions, you will be touched by these heart-warming stories written by the Executive Director of Gray Doves International, the gifted Barbara S. Johnston.
Babushka Natasha Vassilyeva, once a brilliant pianist, falls into the dark world of depression after the death of her husband. A young nurse enters her world and Natasha's determination and love of music bring her back into life with a new purpose.
Babushka Irina is an 86-year-old peasant woman who sparks community action to save her village from environmental damage.
Babushka Valentina Yablokova is homeless, living on the streets, and suffers confusion due to lack of nutrition. She finds a small dog, which leads her to a missing piece of her life.
Babushka Vera grew up in an orphanage. She married well and enjoyed a life of privilege. When AIDS touches her life, she learns to forget the painful memories of her childhood and focus on healing the health problems in her country.
Babushka Helena Gordova Mironovitch emigrated to the United States after WWII with her husband, Gennady. Gennady's memoirs chronicling their escape and resettlement lead to the solutions of a family mystery.
Babushka Kristina Andrekova is a basket weaver who lives a simple life. Never married, she hides from the world until the love of a man and his son who see her inner beauty cause her to blossom.

Royalties from Babushka! Grandmother's Bench have been donated by the author, Barbara S. Johnston, to Gray Doves International to help pay for the shipping of gifts, clothing and other items to elderly women in need around the world. For more information on how you can help this effort, please visit the Gray Doves International web site at graydoves.org.
Proceeds from her writing will also be used for the latest program developed by Gray Doves.
The program, known as "Lovestock" will provide animals to women with the skills and health to maintain them. Products from these animals, such as milk and eggs, will help them to earn a bit of money as well as nourish their minds and bodies. Ms. Johnston says, "Ownership of a milk cow or a goat, or perhaps a small flock of chickens not only is beneficial to society, but grants a measure of self esteem to these women. We have seen tremendous changes in women who often will form small groups to care for them. Although they may have lost everything, they now have somewhere to place their focus, rather than their depression. I have seen women cradle a baby animal as one would cradle a child, with a smile as big as the sun."
Babushka will indirectly put smiles on many elderly faces and warm your heart as you read their stories as well.

This book is dedicated to those who have extended their compassion to the less fortunate and to those women who now suffer with dignity. It is our hope that this book will bring a greater awareness of their value and honor for our elderly grandmothers...the Babushka!
