The Hines Bush Family tells one family's tale of the American experience and aims to assist researchers who wish to pursue their own Barnwell, South Carolina roots. Recounting the challenges, choices, and triumphs of successive generations of people of color, Wilhelmena Kelly relates distant examples of wisdom and leadership that, when examined, reveal the shared history of many of today's Southerners.

This volume comes with an indexed guide to old church cemeteries and long-forgotten Barnwell burial grounds, providing a name-by-name list of ancient county residents, many who have descendants now living in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., to name just a few. It also includes the only known index to 1860 Slaveholders in Barnwell County, widening the trail to further discovery.

It is quite possible that a potential reader might wonder, "Who is Hines Bush, and why is he important enough to merit a book?" After all, he was not famous. He was never a soldier, and never fought in a war. He was not rich, or self-made. So, why write about him? For me, the answer is clear.

Hines Bush is being memorialized here because of what he represents and for his place in history. And, because he is an African-American everyman of mixed ancestry who is still remembered by his family, more than 145 years after his birth.

Hines is important because he represents a key transitional period for America, and for many Americans who shared his lifetime.

He was a member of the last generation of blacks born into slavery, and among the first to enjoy the freedoms of emancipation...all within his single lifetime.

He was descended from the residents of America's countless small, southern towns, where neighbors shared centuries of history and ancestry, regardless of their color.

He represents the last generation of farming Americans who were tied to the land, but whose children fled to northern cities in search of more promising economic and educational opportunities.

He is great-grandfather to today's baby boomer generation, and grandfather to America's "Greatest Generation," those aging veterans of world wars, and survivors of the Great Depression.

He is the faintly recalled ancestor who is spoken of with fondness, regret, sorrow, or pride. He is also the shadowy ancestor who is perhaps never mentioned, an unwanted specter of slavery and bondage.

Hines is remembered here before the oral history vanishes. And, before the federal census records are possibly closed to the public in the name of "National Security."

This is an effort to document the descent of related families, and to share those findings with anyone who remembers, wishes to know more, or can add to the knowledge of South Carolina's Barnwell district, both during the antebellum period and in the years that followed.

It is through successful collaboration that this book came to fruition. And, it is through this gained knowledge that I can confidently state: Hines Bush is my great-grandfather, and this is the story of his family.
