About the Author:

John C. Super is Professor Emeritus of History at West Virginia University. He is the co-author (with Briane K. Turley) of "Religion in World History "(Routledge, 2005) and (University of New Mexico Press, 1988).

From Booklist:

For today's high-school students, the 1970s seem a long way back in the past. This set covers most of the notable events and people of the decade as well as many trends in politics and popular culture. More than 650 alphabetically arranged articles (Abortion rights through Zodiac Killer) are included from the period beginning January 1970 through December 1979 and range in length from one to five or six pages. Among the longest are Vietnam War and Women's rights. Each signed entry establishes the dates, location, and significance of the topic. Most of the longer essays also include boldface subheads to help the reader locate subsequent events and other important information. A few books, mostly published within the past 10 years, are suggested at the end of each article for further reading. Cross-references are also found at the end of most entries. For example, Smoking and tobacco sends readers to Advertising; Cancer research; Cigarette advertising ban; Health care in the United States; Nader, Ralph; Television in the United States; and Women's rights.

Notable about this set is its inclusion of many articles with a Canadian emphasis; Education in Canada is followed by Education in the United States. Similar treatment can be found in Business and the economy, Health Care, Housing, Income and wages, and International Trade.

The table of contents is repeated in each of the three volumes, but the index is only in volume 3. Volume 3 also includes indexes to photos and people plus lists of major films, TV programs, books, music, sports, legislation, and Supreme Court decisions. A glossary of words and phrases popularized in the 1970s features such gems as psychobabble, rope-a-dope, and sock it to me.

Most high-school, public, and undergraduate libraries will find this set attractive, informative, and browsable. Lots of popular culture is mixed in with the more historical description of the period. As with any encyclopedia, one might quibble about what's included--for example, there is an entry for Hot tubs but not for the Pill (contraception is only mentioned as part of Sexual revolution). Still, this set will help students get insights into the many changes of the decade and help refresh memories of those who lived through it. It is recommended along with its companions, The Fifties in America (2005) and The Sixties in America (1999). Susan Gooden
