9781587652707: American Presidents, 3rd Edition-2 Vol. Set

In the two hundred years since its inception, the U.S. presidency has survived controversy, scandal, resignation, civil war, and assassination. Every individual who has assumed the title of president has left a mark, for good or ill, on American history. "American Presidents" examines the strengths and weaknesses, the successes and failures of each Chief Executive. Designed as a companion to Salem's "American First Ladies, Second Edition" (2006), "American Presidents, Second Revised Edition" presents an essay on the life and administration of each U.S. president, in chronological order. In addition, an "Alphabetical List of Presidents" at the beginning of volume 1 helps readers find a particular entry. Each essay begins with ready reference information: name; administration number and years (e.g. "7th President, 1829-1837"); birth and death dates and locations; political party; vice presidents; and cabinet members by department. The text that follows offers a comprehensive portrait of the life and times of the president, from birth through political rise, election, term of office, defeat or retirement, and death. Topical subheadings help guide readers through the material. The legacy of each administration is measured against the yardstick of U.S. history, and the evolution of the office and the country can be traced clearly. Every essay ends with an annotated bibliography and is signed by the author. New to this edition, every entry features at least two boxed sidebars, which are essays-within-essays: "The First Lady" and "The Vice Presidency." In some cases, more than one First Lady profile appears. Other textual sidebars reproduce primary documents - such as Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence, the Monroe Doctrine, or Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation - and many entries offer excerpts from famous presidential speeches and other quotations. More than two hundred photographs complement the text.

From Booklist:

Although the second edition of this work came out only six years ago, a lot has happened to the office of the presidency in particular and to the world in general. Furthermore, this new edition is more than a mere update and the addition of an article on George W. Bush.

The resource has expanded to two volumes. Essays on recent presidents have been revised, the bibliographies have been updated and changed to lists with full bibliographic citations, and sidebars on every First Lady and every vice president have been added. In addition, there are now more primary documents as well as excerpts from many presidential speeches. Two new appendixes cover "Executive Departments and Offices" and "Museums, Historical Sites, and Web Sites." The new introduction traces the evolution of the presidential office from its founding through the "traditional" era (George Washington to Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and into the "modern" presidency so influenced by the mass media. Robert Watson has updated Michael Witkoski's lengthy essay, "The American Presidency: An Overview," which examines the Electoral College; the impact of political parties, wars, and other factors on the office; and the importance of the presidency to the nation and the world.

The signed, scholarly articles provide 7- to 40-page overviews of each president in chronological order, offering ready-reference information and thorough examinations of the strengths, weaknesses, and political legacy of each chief executive. The appendixes include such items as the "Law of Presidential Succession"; "Presidential Election Returns, 1789-2004"; and "First Ladies." (First Ladies, of course, receive fuller treatment in the companion resource, American First Ladies, 2006.) Although these essays include biographical information on each president, the emphasis is on their political activities rather than their personal characteristics. Readers wanting to know more about the presidents' foibles and such will need to examine full biographies or Jeffrey D. Schultz's Presidential Scandals (CQ, 2000).

Academic and public libraries will want this new edition. Libraries that serve history scholars and hold earlier editions of this work and copies of The Presidents: A Reference History (Scribner, 1996) might want retain them so that students can clearly see how analytical essays reflect the times in which they are written. From School Library Journal:

Grade 9 Up–This set illuminates all 43 presidencies and contains extensive information on the office. Authoritative essays, ranging in length from 20 to 40-plus pages, open with fast facts and a black-and-white portrait. In addition to biographical information, unbiased appraisals of events during each administration (September 11 and the War on Terror, The Iraq War), and excerpts from speeches, the entries convey a sense of the president as a person. New to this edition are sidebars on the First Ladies and vice presidents that provide insight on their influences and relationships. For example, in reading about Louisa Adams, readers are offered a window into the personality of the ambitious John Quincy Adams and his wife's increasing loneliness and estrangement during their marriage (which paralleled Adams's frustration during his political life). Volume two includes 155 pages of extras including the text of the U.S. Constitution and Presidential Election Returns, 1789-2004. Average-quality, black-and-white photos and reproductions illustrate the volumes. This updated set is more comprehensive than Martin W. Sandler's Presidents (HarperCollins, 1995) and David Rubel's Scholastic Encyclopedia of the Presidents and Their Times (2005). While students can find facts about the presidents and primary documents through numerous subscription databases and online sites, the depth and breadth of coverage in American Presidents will give researchers a strong advantage.–Tina Hudak, St. Albans School for Boys, Washington, DC
