From Booklist:

Salem Press has released another installments in the ongoing effort to document major historical events. Great Events from History: The 20th Century, 1971–2000 contains 1,083 essays and  is a companion to Great Events from History: The 20th Century, 1941–1970 (2008) and Great Events from History: The 20th Century, 1901–1940 (2007). The set incorporates previously published series, including revisions of entries in the other Salem Press titles, such as Chronology of European History, 15,000 B.C. to 1997 (1997); Great Events from History: North American Series, Revised Edition (1997); and Great Events from History II (1991–1995). Salem has added 379 completely new essays.  Bibliographies in the original articles have been updated and expanded. Maps, photos, and sidebars accompany the text.  Essays range in length from three to five pages and all adhere to a uniform format, which adds to browsability. The top matter of each entry includes the date of the event, its common name, a summary paragraph, the locale, categories under which the event is indexed, key figures, a summary of the event, significance, further reading, and cross-references to other essays. Volume 6 for each set contains a bibliography, a chronological list of entries, and indexes by location, category, personages, and subject. It behooves the reader to glance at the “Publisher’s Note” for each set, which shows how many articles fall under topics such as “Animals and Endangered Species,” “Science and Technology,” and “Wars, Uprisings, and Civil Unrest.” Geographic diversity is also broad. A sampling of other topics includes “Civil Rights and Liberties,” “Crime and Scandal,” “Expansion and Land Acquisition,” “Music,” “Terrorism,” and “Women’s Issues.” One may think that if libraries own earlier allied sets, the purchase of Great Events from History: The 20th Century, 1971–2000 is unnecessary. This is not the case since to compete with the likes of Wikipedia, libraries must present credible and authoritative print information in an efficient and accessible format. Recommended for public and undergraduate libraries. --Jerry Carbone
