What's My Communication Style?

9781588543172: What's My Communication Style?

Effective communication is the lifeblood of any organization. But communication chaos can emerge in the form of tension between management and employees, inefficient customer service, or myriad other problems that can hurt your organization's productivity. Without clear communication, every corner of your business can suffer!

What's My Communication Style helps individuals identify how they communicate and gives them the tools to develop a new outlook regarding the art of communication. This assessment and training workshop improves people skills, helps employees at all levels work better together, and cultivates a better understanding of communication patterns.

Learning Outcomes

- Identify an individual preference for one of four personality styles
- Learn to identify the characteristics of each style
- Discover how style affects communication
- Learn how to "speed read" a person's communication style
- Understand how to "flex" style for effective communication with others

How It Works

For the assessment, participants respond to 24 different workplace and communication scenarios by choosing the statement they believe best reflects their perceived communication behavior. Scoring of the responses reveals an individual's Communication Style Profile. The profile points to a preference for one or more personal communication styles: Direct, Spirited, Considerate, and Systematic.

The Self-Assessment, which is available in print or online form, takes around 10 minutes to complete. We recommend allowing approximately one hour for score interpretation, debriefing, discussion, and action planning. The Facilitator Guide offers various easy-to-follow workshop outlines to expand the classroom training into a half-day program.

Trainer certification is not required in order to facilitate What's My Communication Style?

Uses for What's My Communication Style?

What's My Communication Style is appropriate for use with anyone and is equally effective for personal and management development. It can be used as a standalone training development tool, or it can be incorporated into a more comprehensive training program on communication skills. It also serves as an effective foundation for a variety of soft-skills training topics, including communication, leadership, team building, and supervisory skills.

Theory

What's My Style? is based on the well-known research and personality theories of psychologists Carl Jung, William Moulton Marston, and others. This research has identified two basic dimensions of style, which we refer to as assertiveness and expressiveness. Assertiveness is the effort a person makes to influence or control the thoughts or actions of others. Expressiveness is the effort that a person makes to control his or her emotions and feelings when relating to others.

Combining the two dimensions results in a four-quadrant model with four unique personal styles. This is the basis for the HRDQ Style Model and the assessments and training in the HRDQ Style Series.
