Gaby Hansen grew up in South Africa studying illustration. Before working on children's books, Gaby illustrated textbooks. She has also illustrated the tiger tales books Are You Ready for Bed?, Big Bears Can!, The Magic of Christmas, and Molly and the Storm. Gaby now lives in Brighton, England, with her daughter and their dog. From School Library Journal:
reS-Gr 2-An expansive picture book whose engaging animal characters live at ground level in a verdant forest. Molly Mouse is enthralled when she spies a Christmas tree shining and glittering inside a house. Wanting one like it, she enlists the help of her siblings and they go off to the woods. They encounter natural enemies-a dog, a fox, a magpie, a cat-who, because it's Christmas, are kind to them and acquire some objects that would make nice ornaments. The mice eventually find an evergreen and adorn it with their found items, but with disappointing results. The tree is "magically" transformed, however, when the forest creatures add decorations and a frost makes everything glitter (foil snowflakes and stars). "And because it was Christmas, all the animals from the woods sat quietly around the tree, at peace with each other." The unforced childlike appeal of the plot and pictures carries the story winningly.-S. P.
