Tim Warnes' other books include "'Little Tiger's Big Surprise!"' and "'I Don't Want to Take a Bath!"', both written by Julie Sykes, and "'Davy's Scary Journey"', by Christine Leeson. He lives in England with his wife, illustrator Jane Chapman. From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 1-Dotty's having fun opening all of her birthday cards, but she can't find her friends. Looking for Pip, the spotted white pup comes upon a ball from the mouse instead. As she plays with it, Dotty notices a trail of arrows that leads her to a bone from Tommy the Tortoise. More arrows and more presents follow until she reaches the biggest gift of all, on the final, foldout page-a red box filled with her friends, wearing party hats and balloons. The adorable cartoon illustrations in bright colors perfectly convey the excitement of Dotty's birthday surprise. The wordy, pedestrian text, however, drags the book down. Children may have fun locating Dotty's friends lurking in the spreads or finding the ladybug that appears in each scene, but they will probably find it more entertaining to make up their own story to go with the pictures than to listen to this one.
