PreS. Black and white combine to create many forms, particularly animal forms, in this simple picture book with a brief, rhyming text. Slovenian illustrator Prap contributes a series of bold compositions in her signature style, with pastels on black paper giving a speckled texture to the otherwise flat areas of white and various colors. On the opening pages, a skunk, tail raised, represents "stinky," a striped snake illustrates "slinky," and an orca and a few black-and-white fish demonstrate "large and small." Other animals, a snowman, and finally two dancers interpret the succinct words and phrases that follow. With eye-catching images and a short but satisfying text, this cheerful picture book offers toddlers a rewarding experience. Carolyn Phelan
